We are now in our new RV home and back on the road to do some sightseeing this summer on the east coast. We will be checking out history related sights, especially focusing on the Civil War. This first post is not Civil War related but definitely history based. Touring our first president’s home is our first stop.
The Mount Vernon Ladies Association who bought Mount Vernon in 1858 restored his home to 1799 the year he died. When Washington died the plantation covered 8,000 acres but the current estate covers only 500 of the original acres. This includes the mansion, slave quarters, other outbuildings, gardens, farm, distillery, gristmill, museum, Washington’s tomb, slave memory and cemetery. Definitely want to schedule a full day if you plan to visit.
Here are some pictures from our visit.
