Tonto National Monument – Cliff Dwellings – Roosevelt, AZ

This national monument is located in the Superstition Mountains near Roosevelt Lake and is surrounded by the Tonto National Forest. Construction of the upper and lower cliff dwellings began around 1300 and lasted till around 1450. These dwellings are located within a cave and were occupied by the Salgado culture. Many of the artifacts that were excavated are located inside the visitor center.

The walk from the visitor center to the dwellings is a bit of a hike. It’s paved but steep. There are lots of beautiful plants and cacti to look at along the way. Hope you enjoy the drive and the hike.

This is the last post for this area. We are moving a few hours north to Sedona, Arizona.
