The Kancamagus Highway – New Hampshire

The Kamcamagus National Scenic Byway located in the White Mountain National Forest is one of the most beautiful 34 miles you can drive. We started at the ranger station and picked up our detailed map of the byway that runs from Conway to Lincoln. Are you ready for a drive???

6 miles into the drive you reach the Albany Covered Bridge.

View from the bridge

Just a mile up the road we get to our first waterfall called Lower Falls. As you can see from the pictures it is a favorite swimming hole.

We didn’t bring our bathing suit’s so let’s get back on the road.

Look what we see next. If you read some of my previous Maine posts you would know that I have given up on my search to see moose in the wild!!

Still did not see any moose.

We are now at our second falls just 3 minutes up the road called Rocky Gorge.

The boulders and rushing water is just incredible!!

We are back in the truck and next we are stopping at the Russell-Colbath House. This historic house is all that remains of Passaconaway Village. One of the amazing facts about this house was at its time it was in the heart of logging country and the last owner before the park bought it noted that she could see 23 mountains when looking out her windows. Today the forest has grown back in on all sides almost completely surrounding it.

See the little dragonfly or moth. It was buzzing all around these beautiful flowers.
This thistle plant was just covered in butterflies. The green leaves with purple flowers and orange butterflies was gorgeous. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

I know enough flowers!!! The flowers were so vivid with the sunlight that day🌞

Let’s go another three miles up the road and we have another falls. This falls is called Sabbaday Falls and involved a small hike of about 1 mile. The hike was all tree covered and along a stream so it was a great way to stretch our legs. Sabbaday Falls is a series of falls. The first one is beautiful on it’s own but it just keeps getting better as you climb the steps. Ready for a hike??

We are walking to the falls so the water is coming at us. It looks so calm and peaceful here.
Next you come to this gorgeous little reservoir. The deep water was so clear and beautifully reflected the green color from all the trees

Falls number one is what fills the reservoir. The sound of the water rushing through the rocks is incredible. As you see in the picture we have some steps we have to climb to continue our hike. Let’s go.

Just wait. As you move up the rocks towards the stairs you can start to see falls number two. Can you see it at the top?
You made it up the first set of steps. Let’s take a break and enjoy. 😊
Let’s move a little closer up the observation deck and look we have falls number three!
Here is a view looking back from where you came. There is a soft layer of rock between the boulders and the water just keeps eroding away the rock to make the gorge.

Little closer look at falls number two and three.

Side view of falls number three.

Wow!!! Pictures can not truly show how beautiful and peaceful this place is tucked away in the woods. As Ed and I are walking back along the trail, we wonder how many more places are there on this earth like this that no human has discovered yet.

Nature is so beautiful when guided by God as the artist!

That is the last of the falls on our scenic byway. Let’s move on to some scenic mountain overlooks. On the last ten miles we have five overlook areas to stop and take in the breathtaking views of the White Mountains.

Time to turn around and head back home. On our way back let’s see if we can find a mountain pond that we missed along the way called Lily Pond.

It’s just a gravel pull off, then a very short walk to the pond. The map says the pond is known for moose sightings and reflects the mountains. Let’s see if we can find it.

First we have to go through some bushes. I don’t think it sees a lot of foot traffic based on the overgrowth on the trail. There were these beautiful bushes that made me think of Christmas!!!
We made it!! Wow look at that!
No moose yet again

That is it for this drive. I hope you have enjoyed the ride!!!
