Silver Springs State Park – Silver Springs, Florida

Silver Springs State Park is the home of the famous glass bottom boats. This park has a very long interesting history dating back to the late 1870s when the first piece of glass was fixed to the bottom of a rowboat. From the 1920s to 1950s Silver Springs turned into Florida’s first bond fide attraction. Hollywood discovered the Springs in 1930s and over the years it has been featured in over 20 movies including Rebel Without a Cause, James Bond movie Moonraker, Creature from the Black Lagoon and six Tarzan flicks. But starting in the 1970s with the addition of other attractions just south of the park such as Disney, the attendance at the park was a steady decline with eventually the Florida Park Service taking over the park in 2013. The park encompasses over 4,000 acres and besides the glass bottom boats it is a great park for hiking and kayaking. My mom and aunt were visiting with us for the weekend so off we went to check the park and ride the famous glass bottom boats.
