Turquoise Trail National Scenic Byway – New Mexico

Our campground is located at the northern end of this scenic byway. It took a whole day to explore the sites along the 54 miles so there will be four posts on this trip. This first post will cover the scenic part of the byway and our stop at the Cerrillos Turquoise trading post and mining museum.

I am not sure how to describe the mining museum except it had so much old things my dad could have spent days here!!! I will say it did a great job of covering the history of the town of Cerrillos. This town has dirt roads and definitely reminds you of the old west!!! In the 1880’s it had 21 saloons and four hotels that were supported by the miners who extracted gold, silver, lead, zinc and turquoise from the surrounding hills.

Hope you enjoy our drive of the Turquoise Trail.
